There must be a better way.

If there’s one thing I’ve concluded from being a woman, being surrounded by the women in my life, and working with women 1:1, it’s this:

There must be a better way.

That is, there must be a better way for women to ‘do life’, than the way we’re currently doing it.

Because the way we’re currently doing it? It’s resulting in an epidemic of women who are falling apart at the seams, while putting on a brave face for the world.

And, in my opinion, this is not ok.

In 2014, when I was in my final year of study, I was sick 8 months in a row with the same glandular virus – from January through August.

Every four weeks, I’d get it again. It would knock me around for about a week at a time.

That year, I was overloading theory units online, working 30-40 hours a week as a nanny to support myself financially, and doing student clinic on the weekends. I also moved house about 3 times that year.

Each time I fell ill, I felt as though I couldn’t rest.

There were things going on. I dosed myself up on nurofen to fly across the country for a birthday party, to go to a beautiful countryside wedding, to take exams, and to keep working. I knew I was ignoring my body, and I certainly knew that nurofen wasn’t the answer, but I simply felt like I didn’t have a choice.

Slowing down didn’t feel like an option within my busy life (even though I knew better!!).

Life doesn’t stop for any of us … but if WE don’t stop when we really need to? Then we eventually learn our lessons.

By the time I graduated, I was (gratefully) well again – albeit exhausted.

I vowed that I would never keep pushing through my bodies signs and symptoms like that again. Ignoring my inner wisdom and guidance.

This experience deeply taught me: signs and symptoms are the bodies intelligence, trying to show us what needs to change.

For me, I needed to slow down. Desperately, more than anything else, the pace of life, the way I was living, needed to be slower, more gentle, less full to the brim.

Hence, my own personal ‘slow down movement’ was born.

This was possibly the greatest experience I could have ever asked for, just before entering the ‘real world’, and working with naturopathy and coaching clients.

After this experience, it’s of no surprise to me that I have ended up working exclusively with women – nearly ALL of whom report to me that they are struggling under the amount they have on their plate. That they feel overwhelmed, burnt out, and truly exhausted. Just like I did that year.

The universe keeps on delivering me different versions of what I used to be!

I believe that it’s BEYOND time for a revolution, in the way Modern Women prioritise their own health, wellness, desires and soul fulfilment.

The more I observe the women in my own life, both personally and professionally, and the more I observe myself, I can see how deeply ingrained it is for us to sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice – for the sake of everybody else, but rarely for ourselves.

It’s innate. We are born nurturers. We are intuitive healers, by our inherent nature as women. It’s our feminine essence.

It’s so natural for women to fix things, to get things done – that we don’t even question it.

We just keep going, hoping that the time will come where we can focus on ourselves again. Where we can tend to our own needs, desires and dreams.

But unfortunately, that time never comes – unless we step up and declare it for ourselves.

So, my writing is always an ode to women – to the many hats we wear, to the contribution that we make to the lives of SO many people, and to our incredible ability to nourish and nurture those around us.

But most of all – it’s an ode to our collective health and wellbeing – something that desperately (and finally) needs to be prioritised.

The Slow Down Movement, is a movement that I believe needs to happen, in order for us to truly thrive.

I hope you’ll join me, and say ‘yes’ to honouring YOUR truth – in some small way – each and every day.
